Artist Interview: Lisa Schureman of ThatOldBlueHouse2 on Etsy.

When you take lots of nifty, vintage, worn things and turn them into something new that still looks old, then you've got my attention.  This artist does such a wonderful job creating lovely trinkets that I wanted to get to know her better.  Please join me as I chat with Lisa Schureman of ThatOldBlueHouse2 on Etsy.

1. Were you always an art kid, or did you stumble upon the creative life later on?

Growing up I wouldn’t say I was an art kid. I appreciated art but never felt exceptionally talented or gifted. I couldn’t draw or paint so I didn’t consider myself an artist, craftsperson yes, but artist no. I didn’t discover stained glass until I was on my own, out of college. I took a stained glass class because I wanted to make myself a lampshade, and fell in love with glass.

2. What style of art/craft is your favorite and why?

I love all different styles of art, but am particularly drawn to Black and White Photography and Collage. My Grandfather started a mail order photofinishing studio which my father & uncle inherited. I loved going to work with my dad as a child. The shop was in an old building & it was a great place to hang out & watch the film processing. This was back in the late sixties – seventies.

3. What do you use for inspiration, or how do you generate ideas?

After I took my first Stained Glass class I made my lampshade, then suncatchers from glass pattern books. As my experience grew, I started to experiment with my own ideas and creations…I began creating glass windows in quilt patterns which incorporated old quilt pieces in the design. Now I mainly create jewelry….I find the older I get I enjoy the immediate gratification I get from jewelry, versus the length of time it takes to make a window! The inspiration for my jewelry comes from antique & vintage pieces I find when rummaging through antique shops and auctions.

4. Walk us through your creative process from idea to finished project.

Since I love going to auctions and antique shops, I tend to pick up different items here and there without any particular idea for their use in mind. For instance, I have containers full of old lace, buttons, marbles, crazy quilts, old paper etc….I may pick up an awesome glass button/buttons (my latest obsession) with a necklace in mind. When I get home I will look in my glass button box & am inspired by buttons I haven’t seen for a while, so then my day becomes a glass button jewelry day! So in other words, there is no rhyme or reason, just whatever hits me that particular day.

5. What is a typical day in your life?

My typical day is up around 6 a.m….a few cups of coffee. If I have orders I need to make I usually work on those first thing. I always try to get orders out before I work on creating new pieces…That way I get the “have to” done before I work on the “create and fun” stuff. I am most efficient in the mornings, maybe it’s the coffee! Afternoons I finish up & ship orders, work on promoting my etsy shop on the computer and then plan the items I will be working on for the next day & prep them so I can work on them in the house in the evening.

6. What do you think draws you to other people's work?

I am drawn to Artists that are great craftsmen & create unique things. I enjoy all art forms, but love work that makes me say “wow, who would have thought of that”!

7. What are your interests/hobbies?

My hobbies are antiquing and going to auctions. Also, attending my kids sporting events.

8. Is this your full time job, or do you have a job out-of-studio?

My goal when my children were young was to be able to stay at home with them. I worked hard to try and achieve that goal by selling my glass at shows in the early days, then wholesale and shows, and now online. Now that my youngest is a senior, I have just taken a seasonal job at the local grain elevator for fall harvest…yes I live in a farming community!

9. What is your favorite piece you've ever made and why?

I don’t know if I have a favorite piece. I love everything that I have made or else I wouldn’t make it.

10. What advice would you give to an artist/crafter just starting out in the business world?

My advice for an artist/crafter just starting out would be to first, perfect your craft/art. Second, find your own style…don’t copy . Then throw it out there – Do some shows, you will find some good & some bad ones. Talk to people at shows and glean as much information as you can. Don’t be discouraged, I have lots of people that just walk past my booth – my style is not their cup of tea, however, when you find the people that love your work, it is worth it!! Also use social media, and create a website etc….

11. Describe your work space.

My husband and I took a section of our old shed and made an efficiency apartment for my mother to live in when she was ill. After she passed, it became my workshop. I keep all my “stash” out there, and I cut glass, solder, construct, box, and ship from there. Prior to having this workshop, I cut glass & soldered in an unfinished basement & did everything else in my kitchen, den etc…

12. Did you face any setbacks on your path to being an artist/maker?

There have been a few “bumps in the road” along the way. There was a period where I did a lot of wholesale selling, but due to unforeseen circumstances that side of my business stopped & I had to re-evaluate what I really wanted to do.

13. What milestones, goals, or achievements are you striving for right now?

For me, I strive to always improve the quality of my work, and create fresh and interesting pieces of jewelry.

Thank you so much for taking the time to answer my questions!!  Here are some other places you can find Lisa:

Simple, vintage photographs become such works of art when viewed at a later date.  The stunning Percheron horse, the dapper man; it is all perfection.  I hope you agree.

Playlist No. 18--Don't Take It Too Seriously.

Listen Via Spotify or Tumblr.

Winter is a Jerk.

Hello all!  So, we are stuck inside because the temps are currently about zero.  It is set to be below zero a few times over the next few days.  Yesterday wasn't bad.  We played outside in the snow, sledded, etc. Tuna tried to help Joe when she was making a snow angel in the pasture.

Joe in a fit of giggles.

Joe has been drawing a lot more lately.  The other day she drew an amazing bulldog, so I mounted it on a canvas and hung it on the wall.  She was thrilled.
Joe with her bulldog drawing.
I've been trying to get some daily practice in lately.  These fun floral studies have become rather common.  A nice distraction from the winter whiteness happening outside.  If you're interested in any of them, leave a comment here or on Instagram, and I will get back to you.  I'm planning on listing them on Etsy after they dry, but they seem to be selling well just from Facebook and Instagram (yay!!).

Looking forward to next weekend.

Next weekend I have awesome plans!!  Indiana University Art Museum and the Indiana University Cinema are teaming up for an art talk and movie next Sunday afternoon (January 18).  More info here.

The subject of both is Diane Arbus.  Quite the interesting character and photographer to say the least. I'm really excited to peruse the gallery before the talk and soak up as much art-inspiration as my little heart can hold.

The movie they are going to show is "Fur:  An Imaginary Portrait of Diane Arbus."  Nicole Kidman plays Diane.  The movie was made in 2006, but I don't believe I've ever seen it.

I went to their lovely Cinema last Easter to see the "Finding Vivian Meier" documentary.  It was such a delight.  I know I've not been to their gallery since maybe 2004 at the latest, so I'm looking forward to that as well.

And Baby Makes Five.

No, we aren't expecting, and I only have one human child.  My daughter wanted a brother a couple of years ago, so we found Piggybank (the Mastiff, Irish Wolfhound, Rottweiler, St. Bernard Mutt).  She started asking about getting another sibling, so we surprised her with a Boston Terrier Mix Baby.  So without any further ado, here is Tuna (named by a five year old).

Snow, Winter Farm Chores, and November.

This time last year I was teaching two first-time momma cows how to let me milk all while learning how to milk them.  It was quite the steep learning curve, but we all came out in good shape.  They'd both calved heifers (girl calves), and were doing a very good job raising them.  Fast forward and the calves are a year old, mommas are bred to a Hereford bull to have spring calves, and they are all out grazing in the woods lot tonight.  We hit a cold spell this past week here in Southern Indiana.  It is actually snowing as I type.  Farm chores take twice as long this time of year.  Ice is broken, fresh water is poured, and animals are checked over well while they eat their feed twice a day.  What normally takes all of a half an hour in the summer takes about two full hours in the winter.

Things are really heading quickly into the end of the year.  Doesn't seem possible, but I'm sure 2015 will be here in a blink of an eye.  The chores won't get easier until things thaw out next spring, but at least I have the hope that two more adorable calves will be here in about five months.

Have no fear, I'm not lost.

So, it's been a busy summer / fall.  Again I seem to have abandoned my blog.  Have no fear, I am back, and (will hopefully) be posting on a regular basis again.  Here is a quick glimpse of some things I've been up to.  If you want, you can follow me on Instagram for more images like this.

In other news, I'm doing my first craft fair this weekend.  I'm excited, nervous, and hoping for the best.  Stick close, and I'll write again soon.

Illinois Gallivant and Updates.

When I took my artwork to The Open Gallery last week, I decided to celebrate with a gallivant in Illinois.  One of the first towns I came across was Bird.  It was sort of a ghost town, but still lovely and every street had a bird name.
Road Signs in Bird, Illinois.

I also drove through Palestine, and they had (at one time) and Opera House, how amazing is that?!

Fife Opera House, Palestine, Illinois.

My favorite part about any gallivant are the forgotten and rundown places.  This church wasn't as dilapidated as most that I photograph, but I thought it was interesting.

This grain elevator caught my eye from clear across the town of Palestine.

On the home front, Joelee is growing like a weed.  She has matured so much these past few months.  Most days now she can be found (usually barefoot) outside playing on her swing, or hauling her poor kitten around under one arm.  It is amazing how much I love this no-so-little girl.

Joelee a little over four and a half years old.

And I don't think I ever wrote about it, but directly after my grandfather passed away last year, this Hollyhock started growing near our kitchen door.  It might not be that shocking, except we don't have ANY Hollyhocks on the property or nearby that I know of, and Hollyhocks were one of his most favorite flowers.  It's looking like it might bloom on the anniversary of his death.

My mysterious Hollyhock.

And it happens to be my favorite time of year.  The Catalpa trees are blooming.  They have always been my favorite tree, and seeing them bloom every year makes me so happy.

In one week and one day is my Art Show's Artist Reception.  It is such a dream come true to have a solo show, and I'm really looking forward to getting to witness other people looking at my artwork.

If you are in the Vincennes area next Friday, stop by The Open Gallery at 329 Main Street, Vincennes, IN from 5-8pm.  I'd love to see you.
